A WhatsApp három módot tesztel az ismeretlen hívások kezelésére Androidon

WhatsApp Tests Three Ways To Manage Unknown Calls On Android

🌐 A poszt eredeti nyelven jelenik meg.

📱 Hello, Xiaomi Tech Fans!

WhatsApp is developing a new call filtering feature for Android that could give users more control over calls from unknown numbers. The feature is designed to improve on the existing Silence Unknown Callers setting by offering multiple ways to manage incoming calls, including an option that asks callers why they are calling.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.41.4. It remains under development and is not yet available to the general public.

Three Ways To Handle Unknown Calls

The upcoming feature is expected to provide three options within WhatsApp's privacy settings.

Never: This option disables call filtering, allowing WhatsApp to notify users about incoming calls regardless of whether the caller's number is saved in their contacts.

Silence unknown callers: This retains the existing behaviour. Calls from unsaved numbers will not make the phone ring, but they will remain visible in the Calls tab and notifications.

Ask why they're calling: This is the most notable addition. WhatsApp would answer an unknown caller automatically and ask them to explain the reason for their call. The app would then generate a transcript of the response, allowing the recipient to read it before deciding whether to answer.

This approach could help users distinguish potentially important calls from unwanted ones without having to speak to every unknown caller.

Private Transcription Processed On The Device

Privacy is a key part of the feature described by WABetaInfo. According to the report, WhatsApp will generate the caller's transcript locally on the device using language packs, similar to its existing voice message transcription and translation technology.

The call audio would not need to be sent to WhatsApp's servers for transcription. Processing the response on the device is intended to keep the conversation private while allowing users to review what the caller said. Users are also expected to be able to select the language used for transcription.

The reported design aims to preserve the privacy protections associated with WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption. However, the final implementation and its precise privacy details will need to be confirmed when the feature is released.

The current Silence Unknown Callers feature helps reduce interruptions from spam and unwanted calls, but it can also silence legitimate callers whose numbers are not saved. These might include delivery drivers, service providers or people contacting someone for the first time.

With call screening, users could have another way to assess an unfamiliar call before deciding whether to answer. Those who prefer uninterrupted privacy could continue silencing unknown callers, while others could use the screening option to avoid missing potentially important calls.

Apple introduced a similar call screening experience with iOS 26, and WhatsApp is now reportedly developing comparable functionality for Android users.

When Will It Arrive On Android?

For now, WhatsApp's call filtering feature remains under development. WABetaInfo reports that it may reach selected beta testers in a future update, but there is no confirmed public release date.

As with other features in development, the final design, available options and supported languages could change before the wider rollout. If introduced as described, the feature would give Android users another way to manage unknown callers while balancing convenience, privacy and protection against unwanted interruptions.
