Spotify announced on Tuesday that it has removed over 50 million songs deemed to be AI-generated low-quality junk or spam from its user feed over the past year. The platform has also adjusted its recommendation system to prioritize music from real creators.

Spotify stated, "The platform's editorial team adheres to the same standards and will not include AI-generated spam or low-quality tracks in the recommended stream." "Following these adjustments, listener feedback regarding such content appearing in the recommended stream has significantly decreased."

Spotify does not require all AI tracks to be tagged, but it has introduced an "AI Persona" label for creators using virtual AI identities that are not real people, and will not recommend music created by such AI personas. Other music streaming platforms have adopted stricter policies on AI music: YouTube Music adds tags to AI songs; Deezer allows users to filter low-quality AI music; and Bandcamp completely bans AI music from its platform.

Spotify says it uses a combination of user listening behavior and feedback, upload characteristics, metadata, and third-party AI detection tools to determine whether tracks are AI-generated low-quality spam. The company stated last year that it removed over 75 million songs deemed spam. Meanwhile, Spotify is collaborating with Universal Music Group and independent music publisher Believe to launch a tool for creating AI-generated music mixes.
